Arranging Junk

Somehow, I expected to be given gears, buttons, or broken toys to incorporate into my design for MECCA’s “Object Afterlife Art Challenge.” Instead, I was instructed to incorporate any, or all, of these framing samples:

At first, I was underwhelmed. I had hoped that a used – and, preferably, loved – item would inspire an emotionally evocative work. It was challenging to envision framing within an artwork when it’s meant to surround a piece. I picked up additional materials at MECCA, Bring Recycling, Next Step Reuse Store, as well as thrift stores, and arranged random objects into various compositions:

The arrangement above reminded my husband of Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” so I went in that direction:

I have applied an encaustic layer, and am adding detail:

I think that arranging junk is expanding my creative mind. :)
